In writing Memories of an Ash Covered Sky, I kept coming back to how fire mirrors the quiet unraveling of relationships. Something seemingly small can grow into something consuming if left unchecked. Below are some reflections on the ways families can burn and heal, drawn from the emotional core of the story.
“Family should be the place where you can be your most complete self. Where you're accepted and appreciated, seen and valued, even in moments of disagreement.”— Oprah Winfrey

Fire reflects the quiet devastation that can fester within families, often unnoticed until it is too late. The unraveling begins with small sparks such as resentment, misunderstandings, unspoken words, unmet expectations, that gradually grow and spread.
Just as flames strip the land bare, a lack of empathy erodes the core of family life. Warmth fades into cold indifference, turning loved ones into strangers. Trust becomes fragile, vulnerable to the smallest spark, a lie, betrayal, or broken promise, and suddenly everything ignites.
Flames consume everything in their path, much like the absence of communication can hollow out a family. Strong connections fade into shallow interactions, leaving only delicate fragments of what once was. Land may heal in time, but the wounds of fractured relationships can linger, if unaddressed, forever.
Destruction is not just about losing possessions. It is about losing connection. The slow erosion of relationships often happens not in one sudden blaze but over years of neglect and silence.
And yet, even in the deepest canyons of estrangement and destruction, a path home still exists. The clouds of anger and disappointment may obscure a parent’s love, like dense fog in the night, but that love is never extinguished.
Healing requires courage, vulnerability, and a shared willingness to mend the broken threads of the past. For a child, the journey back begins with an unwavering belief that they

are welcome, that the door will always remain open.
Thank you for taking the time to read these reflections. Perhaps they resonate with you and spark your own thoughts about connection, family, and healing.

So appreciate what you said. Having 2 estranged kids is heartbreaking, I want to believe reconciliation will come, and yes, the door is ALWAYS open. Thanks for your thoughts Mike.
